Here is how the rule applies to the most common drawing scenarios on the flop. Note: As the number of outs gets very high (like 15+ outs), the Rule of 4 overestimates your percentage slightly, but it remains a great benchmark for quick decision-making. Examples: Using Rule 4 with the Turn and River 2 cards to be dealt.
Percentage and Courting Outs
The Rule of 2 and 4 is a simple mental shortcut to quickly calculate the percentage chance of hitting a winning card while playing Texas Hold'em. It allows you to convert your number of outs into an estimated win percentage in seconds without doing complex math.
How It Works
Depending on which stage of the hand you are in you multiply your number of outs by either 4 or 2.
- On the Flop (2 cards left to come): Turn and River: Multiply your outs by 4.
- On the Turn (1 card left to come) River: Multiply your outs by 2.
